Today's Mass Readings
๐ธHave mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offence. Wash me thoroughly from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. For I acknowledge my offence, and my sin is before me always. Against you only have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight.
A man had two sons. The younger one demanded his inheritance, squandered it on wild living, and ended up feeding pigs. Coming to his senses, he set off home rehearsing his confession. While he was still a long way off, his father saw him, was filled with compassion, ran, embraced him and kissed him. The father called for the finest robe, a ring, sandals, and the fattened calf โ for this son of mine was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.
The father runs. In the ancient world a patriarch never ran โ to run was undignified, the work of slaves and children. Yet this father hitches up his robe and sprints toward a son who threw away half the family's wealth. Reread the parable: God is not waiting at the top of the road with crossed arms. He is already running.
