Life
In 1531 the Virgin appeared to St Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill outside Mexico City, leaving her image miraculously imprinted on his tilma. Within a decade nine million indigenous Mexicans were baptised. The tilma's pigment defies chemistry; her eyes contain a microscopic image of the bishop's receiving room.
